Overall, this a great album (easily one of the best of 2020) and a big step up from her first album. It's a shame to end the album on such a sour note. It encourages anonimity between the sexes and alienates part of her fanbase. The final song Boys Will be Boys is a good ballad-like ending but the lyrics of the chorus spoil it. Good in Bed is a fun song that takes itself less seriously and has a cheeky sound. Break My Heart is perhaps trying to be the next New Rules and succeeds while being much less annoying. While the album does sagg in the middle from less "bangers", it's kicked back into gear by the song Love Again which steers the album back into more interesting lyrics and vibes. The song Pretty Please sits nicely in the middle of the album, it's more subtle and laid-back but effective. This is a fairly minor gripe though as the album is clearly trying to own its sound expertly. Songs can sound similar and it's nice to have a consistent sound but it's more interesting if each song has more personality. This means repeated listens can become slightly stale and forgettable, specially if you listen to the album all the way through. The album is not perfect though, sometimes the lightweight pop is so effective that there's not much else underneath. Physical has a great power and energy and is built perfectly for a workout routine. The instrumentation feels very varied and poppy without disrupting the pace and flow of the songs. The track Cool is very cool and one of my favourites. Dua Lipa really seems to have found her voice and sound on this album, she owns it a lot better than before without being annoying. I love the main first single Don't Start Now which has a great swagger and empowerment vibe. It all sounds very trendy and hip and the music flows so effortlessly. The title track is a case in point, it's slick, confident and stylish. It's infectious dancefloor pop finely tuned and smoothed to near perfection. While I enjoyed parts of her first album I was never convinced of the hype but this second album deserves all the plaudits.
